Abstract

If we want to understand the workings of capitalism, why should we think about wealth regimes? Doesn’t capitalism have its own laws of motion, independent from how capital is organized? This book argues that there is no singular, abstract logic of capital. Financial capital controlled by individual capitalists will give rise to a different economy than financial capital controlled by institutions. What is more, different types of institutional capital pools may have diverging ideas for what the non-financial sector should look like in order to serve their needs. The institutionalization of capital therefore marks a new stage in the development of capitalism.
